A Houston-area man said he was forced to make repeated trips to a Social Security office to prove he was alive after the agency mistakenly declared him dead and cut off his disability payments.
Anthony Morales received a condolence letter from the Social Security Administration informing him of his own death, according to an interview with Fox 26 Houston.
“We have learned of the passing of Anthony Morales,” the letter said.
The error stopped his disability checks and left him with a negative account balance, putting him two months behind on basic expenses.
“I can’t afford rent. I can’t afford groceries. I can’t afford maintenance on my wheelchair,” Morales said, per Fox 26.
Morales said he made four trips to a Social Security office to demonstrate that he was still alive. On the fourth visit, he was asked to write on a document, “I’m still alive.”
After the news outlet contacted the Social Security Administration on his behalf, Morales said he was told his case is being expedited and that his payments could resume within three to seven business days.
