The United States helped build NATO to stop Soviet expansion. More than 75 years later, a new Forgotten History episode asks whether the alliance still protects America or leaves U.S. taxpayers and troops carrying the risks for Europe’s security.

“Why The U.S. May Walk Away From NATO” argues that NATO’s Cold War mission has evolved into a long-term American obligation, with Washington providing much of the alliance’s military strength while many European nations rely on U.S. protection.

Host Colin D. Heaton examines Article 5, the alliance’s collective defense clause, and asks whether it strengthens deterrence or increases the risk of drawing the United States into conflicts that may not directly serve national interests.

The episode also revisits moments when NATO allies did not move in lockstep with Washington, including Cold War crises, Middle East conflicts, and disputes over U.S. military action abroad.

Written and hosted by Colin D. Heaton, Forgotten History is a 10th Legion Pictures production.
