A high-speed pursuit that began in Harris County culminated in a fiery crash near the San Jacinto River, leaving the suspect hospitalized, reportedly with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The chase, led by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as the primary and investigating agency, spilled into Montgomery County early Tuesday morning. Speeds hit as high as 145 mph, causing several pursuing units to briefly lose sight of the fleeing vehicle.

Officers from the Splendora Police Department’s Criminal Interdiction Unit regained visual contact and took over the lead role in the pursuit until the vehicle crashed.

The suspect, who authorities said had a long record of fleeing police and was wanted for an evasion charge at the time, was apprehended at the scene. Emergency medical services were called, and medics discovered a gunshot injury to his lower jaw that appeared self-inflicted. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

The pursuit drew support from several law enforcement groups, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, Splendora Police Department, and Texas Department of Public Safety, which provided aircraft assistance.

During the chase, spike strips were used to puncture the vehicle’s tires. The car kept going on the damaged wheels before igniting. The driver pressed on amid the flames until veering into a ravine, where the vehicle was fully consumed by fire.

Officials highlighted the role of cross-agency teamwork, specialized interdiction teams, and determined efforts in resolving the hazardous situation with a focus on protecting the public.
