A Dallas Area Rapid Transit train struck and killed a pedestrian who tried to cross the tracks Friday morning in Garland, authorities said.

Garland police received a request from DART just before 7 a.m. to help control traffic after an incident involving a train and an adult pedestrian, the department said in a Facebook post.

The collision happened near Newman and Austin streets. The pedestrian attempted to cross ahead of a Blue Line train and died at the scene, FOX 4 reported, citing Garland police and DART officials.

Streets and stations reopen

The incident forced authorities to close several intersections along West Walnut Street for an extended period, police said. The department later confirmed that the roads had reopened and traffic was moving normally.

DART arranged buses to carry riders between the Forest/Jupiter and Downtown Garland stations during the disruption. The affected train stations have since reopened, according to the report.

Previous Garland fatality

A DART train also struck and killed 17-year-old Garland High School senior Francisco Chavez near the Forest/Jupiter station in May 2023, days before his graduation, as The Dallas Express previously reported.

Rail safety guidance

DART’s safety guidance urges pedestrians to cross tracks only at designated crosswalks, look both ways and avoid stepping in front of an approaching train. The agency also advises passengers to remain behind the textured warning strips on station platforms.
