Yesterday in Southlake, an 11-year-old girl experienced a bit of a scare when she found herself stuck in a storm grate and her only way out was blocked by snakes.

The girl, Tori, and her older sister Carly, 13, were playing outside on January 20 as their COVID-19 quarantine was coming to an end.

Tori decided to crawl into a drainage pipe during their play, which was “specifically against Mom’s rules.” As she tried to return back the same way she had gone in, the child saw a black snake blocking her exit.

While looking for another way out, she attempted to take a route through another drainage pipe but was met with another snake.

“At first I was wondering if it was like a pipe in there but then I saw scales and was terrified,” Tori told CBS 11 News.

Carly considered helping her sister, but thought better of it after she caught a glimpse of the snakes.

Instead, she went home to get assistance from their mother, who was unable to rescue Tori because she could not open the storm grate.

“Mom came out, failed at lifting the heavy heavy grate, and she gave Tori the option to crawl past a snake (either/or, dealer’s choice) or call the Southlake Police and Fire Departments to rescue her. She chose Southlake Police and Fire, baby,” the Southlake DPS recounted on their Twitter.

The police quickly released Tori from the grate, unharmed.

“We were there in minutes and after about 90 seconds, we got the grate off,” the tweets stated.

The Southlake DPS told the story of the incident in this light-hearted story in a series of tweets. They titled the adventure “HARROWING, TEETH CLENCHING, SNAKE GRATE RESCUE.”

The reptiles were later identified as rat snakes, which are non-venomous. For anyone concerned about what happened to them, officials made sure to add “Snake People—no snakes were harmed!”
