As Texas prepares to host millions of visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, state officials are urging residents and travelers to stay alert and follow basic safety steps.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that safety remains a shared responsibility during the expected increase in travel, crowds, and events.

Colonel Freeman F. Martin said, “Texas is proud to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and for months, DPS and our state, local and federal partners have been planning and practicing to make sure we can provide a safe environment for residents and visitors. Whether you are attending a match, visiting fan events or traveling throughout the state, we encourage everyone to stay alert and follow safety guidance.”

DPS recommends avoiding driving after drinking alcohol and making alternate transportation plans instead. Drivers must eliminate distractions, such as mobile device use, which Texas law bans while a vehicle is in motion. Motorists should move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles, TxDOT and tow vehicles with lights activated, and extend the same courtesy to other stopped drivers.

All vehicle occupants must wear seat belts. Drivers are advised to reduce speed in heavy traffic near arenas, unfamiliar areas, bad weather or construction zones, and to drive defensively with more vehicles on the roads. On multi-lane highways, the left lane is for passing only when posted. Travelers should check the weather and road conditions through Drive Texas before heading out.

Human trafficking often rises during large events, and the public can help by watching for indicators. These include a person appearing to be under another’s physical or psychological control, showing little awareness of their surroundings, having untreated illnesses or injuries, wearing clothing unsuitable for the setting, being transported to work by an employer, living at the workplace, working excessive hours, or facing unusual security at the job site.

Anyone who spots signs of trafficking should call 911 at once with details. Reports can also be made through iWatchTexas or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 by texting “BeFree” to 233733. The free iWatchTexas app, available for iPhone and Android, including a Spanish version, lets users flag suspicious activity related to crime or threats, though it is not for emergencies.
