Fans attending the first of nine World Cup matches at Dallas Stadium on Sunday should prepare for hot, humid conditions, with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms later in the day.
Temperatures are expected to begin in the upper 70s by sunrise as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico continues to fuel humid conditions across North Texas. Clouds may linger through the morning and into the afternoon, but forecasters say they are unlikely to prevent temperatures from climbing.
By midafternoon, around the time many fans will be arriving for the match, temperatures are forecast to reach about 91 degrees. The combination of heat and humidity is expected to push the heat index, or “feels-like” temperature, to nearly 100 degrees.
The National Weather Service typically issues Heat Advisories when heat index values reach or exceed 105 degrees. While Sunday’s projected values are expected to remain below that threshold, conditions could still pose challenges for people spending extended periods outdoors before kickoff.
The weather forecast becomes less certain later in the day as North Texas transitions into a more active pattern. The National Weather Service is forecasting a 60% to 80% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening as a front approaches the region.
Although AT&T Stadium’s roof will shield spectators inside the venue from the weather, fans attending tailgates, outdoor watch parties, or waiting in lines outside the stadium could be exposed to the heat and any developing storms.
Forecasters noted that storms in this pattern could move quickly and produce heavy rainfall. Additional concerns include frequent lightning, localized flooding, and isolated damaging winds. While widespread severe weather is not expected, weather conditions could change as a front approaches.
About 50% of the metroplex will see rain on Monday, mostly in the morning, with showers tapering off in the afternoon. Temperatures on Monday are expected to be noticeably cooler, reaching only about 83 degrees.
Fans planning to attend Sunday’s match between the Netherlands and Japan are encouraged to begin hydrating before game day, wear light-colored clothing, and monitor weather forecasts as storm timing becomes clearer. A compact umbrella may also prove useful, providing protection from both sunshine and rain.
