Dallas Animal Services is urging residents to help ease severe overcrowding at its shelter after a surge in animal intake pushed the facility beyond its preferred operating capacity.

The agency announced this week that it has exceeded critical capacity following the intake of animals from three large-scale cruelty seizures. The increase comes as the shelter continues to care for hundreds of dogs and cats already in its custody.

Dallas Animal Services aims to operate at approximately 80% capacity to support the health and well-being of animals in its care. Officials said current population levels have surpassed that target, placing additional strain on resources and limiting flexibility for future emergency intakes.

Shelter leaders are also concerned that recent rainfall and rising summer temperatures could reduce visitor traffic and slow adoptions during a period when space is urgently needed.

“Our shelter is beyond the population level that allows us to operate most effectively,” said Victoria Chittam Bennett, assistant director of Dallas Animal Services. “Our staff and volunteers continue to provide compassionate care to every animal who comes through our doors, but we cannot do this alone. The community’s support is critical right now. Every adoption, every foster placement, every volunteer shift, and every pet reclaimed by its owner creates space and resources for another animal in need.”

The shelter is asking community members to consider adopting or fostering pets, volunteering their time, reclaiming lost animals currently being housed at the facility, or sharing information about adoptable pets on social media.

Officials said each successful adoption, foster placement, volunteer effort, or pet reunification helps create additional space for animals entering the shelter every day.

Dallas Animal Services is one of the nation’s largest municipal animal shelters and works to promote public safety while seeking positive outcomes for healthy and treatable animals. The agency relies on community partnerships to support adoption, fostering, and other lifesaving programs.
