The White House on January 3 issued a presidential message commemorating the 249th anniversary of the Battle of Princeton, one of the pivotal early victories of the American Revolutionary War.

According to the statement, the Jan. 3, 1777, battle came during the “Ten Crucial Days” following General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River and the Continental Army’s victory at Trenton. After evading British forces overnight, Washington and his troops confronted a British garrison at Princeton, ultimately securing a decisive victory.

The message recounts how British forces initially gained the upper hand during the fighting, including the fatal wounding of Brig. Gen. Hugh Mercer. As additional American forces arrived, Washington rode to the front lines to rally his troops, the statement said, helping turn the tide and force the British to retreat.
