Hyundai Motor America is recalling more than 475,000 vehicles in the United States in two separate safety actions involving fire and braking risks, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Elantra Hybrid Fire Risk
One recall affects 54,337 model year 2024-2026 Elantra Hybrid vehicles because the hybrid power control unit can overheat and increase the risk of a fire. NHTSA said overheating under high electrical loads can prevent affected vehicles from starting or put them into reduced-power mode.
In some cases, the overheating could lead to localized thermal damage to the assembly and internal components, the agency said. Dealers will update the affected software at no cost to owners.
Braking Issue Affects Tucson, Santa Cruz Models
In a separate recall, Hyundai is recalling 421,078 vehicles over a software issue that could cause the brakes to activate unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall covers certain 2025-2026 Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid vehicles. According to the NHTSA, software in the front cameras may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely and unexpectedly apply the brakes.
Hyundai reported four related crashes and four alleged injuries, according to the NHTSA filing.
Hyundai plans to notify owners affected by the braking-related recall by mail in mid-July. Dealers will update the front camera software at no cost.
Recent Hyundai Recalls
The automaker has issued several recalls in recent months. In April, Hyundai and Genesis recalled nearly 300,000 vehicles because of a defect that could cause seatbelt anchors to fail.
In March, Hyundai issued a stop-sale order for certain 2026 Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims after a fatal incident involving rear power seats that may not detect people or objects.
