A wind-blown deck umbrella struck and killed a 56-year-old Huger woman while she was dining at a lakeside restaurant in South Carolina during severe weather, authorities said.
The incident happened Saturday night at Driftwood Grill, Home of the Lazy Gator, on Lake Marion in Clarendon County during the restaurant’s opening weekend.
Storm Turns Deadly
Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell said the woman died at the scene after an umbrella came loose during storms that moved through the area. The coroner’s office scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday.
Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley said the umbrella struck the woman in the neck, severing her carotid artery. High winds during the storm caused the umbrella to break free from its base, WIS News 10 reported, citing authorities.
Restaurant Responds
The restaurant described the death as a “tragic incident” that occurred during a sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion.
In a statement shared after the incident, the restaurant said, “Our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones affected by the tragic incident during last night’s sudden severe weather event at Lake Marion.”
The statement continued: “This has deeply affected many people in our community, including guests, staff, first responders, and everyone involved. Out of respect for the family and those impacted, we ask for continued prayers, compassion, and privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
Restaurant officials also thanked emergency personnel and community members who responded to the scene and later assisted employees, guests, and others affected by the incident.
In another statement, the restaurant said the tragedy had “profoundly affected many, our guests, staff, first responders, families, friends, and the surrounding communities. Like many, our families and team members are heartbroken and still coming to terms with the events that unfolded.”
The business described Driftwood Grill, Home of the Lazy Gator, as “a gathering place designed to unite people, forge lasting memories, and serve the communities we cherish.”
Officials said grief support resources remain available for those impacted as the community continues to process the incident.
