Severe thunderstorms, including an apparent tornado, struck parts of Wise County late Saturday night, killing at least one person and injuring six others in the Runaway Bay area. The storms caused significant structural damage, displacing around 20 to 40 families as homes lost roofs, vehicles were tossed, and power lines came down.
Wise County Judge J.D. Clark confirmed the fatality and injuries during a Sunday morning update, reported Fox 4 News. “Texas weather, it can devastate in an instant, and unfortunately, we’ve seen that here in Runaway Bay tonight,” Clark said. “Please pray for the Runaway Bay community. Pray for those that are suffering a loss tonight.”
The storm moved through western Wise County around 10 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026, producing damaging winds suspected to be of EF-2 strength or greater. First responders faced blocked roads due to debris and downed utilities. A reunification center was set up at 513 Port O’ Call Drive in Runaway Bay for families seeking information or assistance.
Clark reported that multiple neighborhoods sustained heavy damage. At least 20 families were displaced, with some estimates reaching 40. The American Red Cross and other agencies responded to support those affected. A local disaster declaration for Wise County was expected on Sunday.
The National Weather Service surveyed the area as part of damage assessments. Residents and businesses were asked to report impacts through the Texas Division of Emergency Management’s online form to aid recovery efforts.
The severe weather extended across North Texas, with tornado warnings issued for portions of the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Additional reports of damage came from areas including Springtown. Flooding and large hail accompanied the storms in some locations.
This event follows a pattern of active spring weather in the region. No further fatalities have been reported as of Sunday afternoon. Emergency operations continued into the day with utility crews and responders addressing outages and clearing paths.
City and county officials urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious, avoid downed power lines, and monitor updates from local authorities.
