‘The Cowboy Rides Away’? State Fair Rodeo Rides Off Into The Sunset… For Now

The Texas State Fair has canceled the rodeo and pre-fair horse shows in 2026 after evaluating the 2025 fair programming.

“While these events have played an important role at various points in our history, they have not been part of the Fair every year,” officials said. “The rodeo itself returned only a few years ago, and its absence in 2026 does not signal a permanent departure.”

The fair evaluates entertainment, attractions, and exhibitors every year to balance “tradition and innovation,” while staying financially responsible and keeping the event affordable, according to the statement.

“Most importantly, this is not goodbye,” officials said. “Our support for the Texas equine industry remains strong, and we hope to welcome events like these back when conditions allow.”

They thanked participants and attendees for their understanding and contributions to Texas agriculture.

“Your role in our story matters, and we deeply respect the tradition and community you represent,” officials said.

The state fair hosted a rodeo from its inception in 1886, according to WFAA. It ended after roughly a century in the 1980s, but officials brought the event back in 2021, using Fair Park Coliseum for its intended purpose.

“Your participation, passion, and commitment to the equine industry have helped shape the history of the Lone Star State and the State Fair, and have meant a great deal to our organization and to fairgoers across Texas,” officials said.

Visitors to the state fair made a record attendance in 2024, as The Dallas Express reported. However, the numbers dropped by 16% in 2025, the same year officials adopted higher security measures.
