The leader of Dallas’ largest police union is on administrative leave amid an “internal investigation.”
Sr. Cpl. Jamie Castro, president of the Dallas Police Association, was placed on administrative leave on November 14, “pending the outcome of an internal investigation,” said Dallas Police Assistant Director of Media Relations Allison Hudson to The Dallas Express.
“The Dallas Police Department expects every member of the organization to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and accountability,” she said. “Any allegation of misconduct is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and fairly.”
Castro has been a member of the department since May 1998 and was most recently assigned to the Operational Technology/Alarm Unit, according to Hudson.
“No additional details are being released currently to protect the integrity of the process,” she said. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”
Some sources suggested the investigation involves a fatal crash from March, where Castro was the passenger in a vehicle his girlfriend was driving, according to WFAA.
The vehicle allegedly struck Atianna Washington around 10 p.m. on March 15 in the 2500 block of Northwest Highway. Two officers involved are reportedly still on administrative leave, after investigators considered whether they handled the scene properly amid Castro’s presence, as head of the police association.
The officers reportedly did not believe the driver was intoxicated, so they did not administer a drug or alcohol test or ask the driver if she or Castro had been drinking, according to WFAA.
Department policy only requires this testing if officers suspect impairment.
The Dallas Express asked the Dallas Police Association for comment, but did not receive a response in time for publication.
