Trump Hails Border, Energy And Tariff Gains In Primetime Address

President Donald Trump used a primetime address to the nation on December 17 to argue that his first year in office since returning in January marked a dramatic reversal from what he called the failures of the Biden administration, while critics pointed to mixed economic data and continued voter dissatisfaction.

Speaking from the White House, Trump claimed historic progress since January, declaring, “Over the past 11 months, we have brought more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history. There’s never been anything like it.” He said he was elected “with a mandate to take on a sick and corrupt system” and framed his presidency as a sharp break from the previous four years.

Much of the address focused on immigration and crime. Trump accused the prior administration of allowing violent offenders into the country, citing “gang members and even 11,888 murderers,” and said that under his leadership the border had gone from “worst to best.” He claimed that for seven months, “zero illegal aliens have been allowed into our country,” adding, “We didn’t need legislation. We just needed a new president.”

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, citing Department of Homeland Security data, the administration’s claims follow recent DHS figures showing illegal border crossings at their lowest annual level since 1970 and more than 2.5 million illegal aliens leaving the United States since January.

Trump also highlighted law enforcement and drug interdiction, saying his administration “decimated the bloodthirsty foreign drug cartels” and that drugs brought in by sea were “down 94%.” He argued that crime had fallen in major cities and singled out Washington, D.C., as being safer than ever, claims that local and federal crime statistics have shown to vary by category and time period.

On the economy, Trump blamed Biden-era policies for inflation and high prices while insisting conditions are now improving. “Here at home, we’re bringing our economy back from the brink of ruin,” he said. He cited falling prices for gas, groceries and consumer goods, saying, “The price of a Thanksgiving turkey was down 33% compared to the Biden last year. The price of eggs is down 82% since March.” Trump said wages are now rising faster than inflation and that “there are more people working today than at any time in American history.”

Economic data cited by critics paint a more complicated picture. Inflation has reportedly hovered around 3%, and recent federal labor data show slower job growth compared with earlier periods. Seventy-six percent of voters reported negative views of the economy in November, up from 70% who said the same at the end of Biden’s term, Fox News reported.

The November labor report followed a prolonged federal government shutdown, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics said affected data collection and limited month-to-month comparisons.

Trump leaned heavily into tariffs and industrial policy, calling tariffs his “favorite word” and crediting them with driving companies to “build in America.” He said he had secured “a record-breaking $18 trillion of investment into the United States.”  The White House website indicates that the recent investment in the United States includes both commitments and projects already underway.

One of the most tangible new announcements came near the middle of the speech, when Trump unveiled a one-time payment to service members. “More than 1,450,000 military service members will receive a special [payment] we call warrior dividend before Christmas,” he said. “We are sending every soldier $1,776.” Trump said the payments were funded by tariff revenues and that “the checks are already on the way.”

The president also touted efforts to lower prescription drug prices through a “Most Favored Nation” policy, claiming cuts of “as much as 400, 500, and even 600%,” without providing specific price benchmarks, and announced that reduced prices would begin in January through a new website, trumprx.gov.

Trump closed the address with an appeal to national renewal ahead of the country’s upcoming milestones, including the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. “Tonight, after 11 months, our border is secure, inflation is stopped, wages are up, prices are down, our nation is strong, America is respected, and our country is back,” he said, wishing viewers “a merry Christmas and a happy new year.”
