A series of officer-involved shootings (OIS) across North Texas over the past four days has left multiple suspects dead or injured as agencies throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex investigate separate violent encounters involving police.

The five incidents occurred in Richardson, Saginaw, Red Oak, and Fort Worth-area jurisdictions and involved allegations ranging from robbery and assault to armed confrontations with officers.

One of the incidents happened Monday afternoon in Richardson, where police shot a robbery suspect near the 1400 block of East Belt Line Road. Officers were dispatched around 4 p.m. to a reported robbery in progress at a business in the area. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled on foot and was believed to be armed.

Witnesses said that an employee inside the business managed to call police during the attempted robbery, allowing officers nearby to respond quickly. The suspect reportedly fled before stealing anything.

Police later located a person matching the suspect’s description east of the business and attempted to make contact. Richardson police said “an officer-involved shooting occurred” during the encounter. Witnesses said the suspect fired at least one shot before police returned fire.

The suspect was hospitalized, though authorities have not released the person’s condition. No officers were injured.

Another Richardson officer-involved shooting happened Wednesday night outside Good Vibes Bar & Grill on West Buckingham Road after police said a man stabbed four people inside the restaurant. Officers responded around 10 p.m. to reports of a man threatening people with a knife.

Police said officers found the suspect outside the restaurant entrance still armed with the knife, while the victims remained inside. Authorities said officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused. The suspect told officers multiple times that he wanted to die and urged them to kill him. When he began walking toward them with a knife, two officers opened fire, striking him.

Additional officers entered the restaurant to assist the victims until paramedics arrived. Four stabbing victims were transported to hospitals. The suspect later died at a hospital.

Also on Wednesday, a deputy in Ellis County shot and killed an armed suspect during a disturbance call in Red Oak. Deputies responded around 3:36 p.m. to the 100 block of Carol Lane after receiving reports of a man yelling and possibly firing a gun. Another caller reported that the man was threatening to harm himself.

According to the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy encountered the armed suspect and repeatedly ordered him to drop the firearm. Authorities said the suspect refused and pointed the weapon at the deputy, who then fired his service weapon.

Deputies attempted life-saving measures before paramedics arrived, but the suspect later died at a hospital. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation.

In Saginaw, police shot and injured a man Thursday morning while attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant at a home in the 1300 block of North Creek Drive.

According to police, officers arrived around 7:50 a.m., and the suspect resisted arrest, leading to a physical confrontation. During the struggle, one officer fired a weapon, striking the suspect.

The man was transported to a hospital, though officials have not released his condition. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting while Saginaw police review whether department policies were followed. Authorities have not disclosed the charges connected to the warrant.

Another fatal officer-involved shooting occurred during an operation involving the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit. Investigators located a suspect identified as Cruz hiding inside an apartment in Fort Worth. DPS said investigators encountered him in a confined area and ordered him to comply, but Cruz allegedly ignored commands while armed with a knife.

Authorities said investigators opened fire, killing him at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured.

Fort Worth police previously clarified that the officer involved was not from their department, and Northlake police also said the shooting did not involve one of their officers. According to the Texas Attorney General’s Office, the Fugitive Apprehension Unit works to locate violent offenders, parole violators, and sex offenders who fail to register. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting at the request of the Attorney General’s Office.

Each year, the State of Texas compiles a report on all officer-involved shootings (OIS) in the state. Last year, there were 195 officer-involved shootings statewide, resulting in 117 deaths and 78 injuries to individuals. In addition, 27 peace officers were injured by firearms, but no officer deaths were reported.

Reasons for officer involvement included 117 emergency calls or requests for assistance, 21 execution of warrant calls, 26 hostage, barricade, or other emergency situations, 42 traffic stops, and 40 uncategorized situations. Law enforcement agencies may report more than one reason for officer involvement, which is why the total exceeds the number of incidents.

Of the 195 individuals injured or killed in OIS incidents last year, 69 were Hispanic, 66 were Caucasian, 54 were African-American, three were Asian or Pacific Islander, one was listed as “other,” and two were listed as unknown nationality or race. One hundred eighty of these individuals were reportedly carrying a deadly weapon, while 15 did not have a weapon.
