A robbery suspect was taken to a hospital after being shot by police officers on Monday afternoon, according to the Richardson Police Department.
Officers were dispatched around 4 p.m. to a reported robbery in progress at a business in the 1400 block of East Belt Line Road. When they arrived, authorities said the suspect had already fled the scene on foot and was believed to be armed.
Shortly afterward, police located a person matching the suspect’s description walking east of the business and attempted to make contact.
“During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the department said in a news release.
Witnesses said that an employee inside the business was able to contact police during the attempted robbery, prompting officers already in the area to respond quickly. The suspect fled before taking anything of value, CBS News Texas reported.
According to those sources, the suspect fired at least one round before being shot by an officer.
Witness Daniel Abdollahi said he was at a nearby business when he heard the gunfire.
“He did have a handgun, a pistol, wasn’t nothing big,” Abdollahi said, per CBS News. “I mean, first thing I hear is ‘get down, get down.’ POW! One shot, two shots altogether. 2 or 3 shots. No more than that.”
The suspect was transported to a hospital, though their condition has not been released. No officers were injured.
Following the incident, authorities shut down both eastbound and westbound lanes of Belt Line Road between North Plano Road and North St. Johns Drive for several hours.
The police department said the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office has been notified and will conduct a concurrent investigation. As is standard procedure, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details are expected to be released as they become available.
