Travelers throughout Texas are facing significant disruptions at airports as the ongoing Democrat-led shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) enters another week. This situation has resulted in severe staffing shortages at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints.
With spring break in full swing, travelers are encountering lines that stretch up to three hours—and in some cases, even into parking garages at major airport hubs. This chaos has left many families stranded and flights missed, while hardworking TSA officers are caught in the middle of the political turmoil in Washington.

“[Democrats] think that by shutting the government down, they are somehow punishing Donald Trump for winning an election, but President Trump is not the one feeling the pain of a shutdown,” said Chairman Tom Cole, in response to those ongoing and very viral airport delays.
The shutdown, which began on February 14 after Senate Democrats blocked funding over demands for new restrictions on federal immigration operations, has now forced around 50,000 TSA screeners to work without pay. Those employees also received only partial paychecks last month and are now missing full ones, leading to financial strain and increased absences at work, only making the travel delays that much worse.
In Texas, the impact on travel times is significant.
At Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport, wait times averaged 3.5 hours on Sunday, with frustrated passengers complaining of long lines snaking through terminals. George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston also reported extended delays, forcing travelers to arrive four to five hours early to try to make their flights.

“This chaos is a direct result of Democrats and their refusal to fund DHS. These political stunts force patriotic TSA officers, who protect our skies from serious threats, to work without pay,” said Lauren Bis, DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, in a series of X posts on March 8.
“Democrats are shamelessly playing politics with national security, punishing hardworking TSA workers and their families. Enough is enough: stop holding national security and everyday Americans hostage. Democrats must fund DHS now,” she added.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed the sentiment from Bis, accusing Democrats of “intentionally causing American families and federal workers to suffer because of their reckless shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.”

DHS implemented new emergency measures in February, including suspending Global Entry for international travelers and ending courtesy escorts for members of Congress to conserve resources.
Democrats remain dug in, insisting on immigration reforms, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claiming that negotiations are “…still far apart, but we’re still negotiating and exchanging paper back and forth,” Schumer said last week, per The Hill.
As the shutdowns continue, calls grow louder for a resolution.
