Longtime Dallas Cowboys fans are familiar with the feud between former head coach Jimmy Johnson and team owner Jerry Jones that dates back to the dynasty days of the 1990s.

Johnson and Jones’ relationship began in the 1960s when the two were roommates and teammates on the Arkansas Razorbacks. After buying the Cowboys in 1989, Jones immediately fired legendary head coach Tom Landry and replaced him with Johnson.

After a 1-15 season in 1989, the Cowboys quickly found success, winning back-to-back Super Bowls in 1993 and 1994. However, the coach and owner’s relationship soured after Johnson sought more say in the team’s personnel decisions, which Jones was unwilling to concede.

As a result, Johnson left the team and was replaced by former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer, who won another Super Bowl for the Cowboys in 1996, mainly with Johnson’s players.

The 1996 Super Bowl victory was the last time the team made it to the big game.

Despite Johnson’s success with the Cowboys, he has yet to be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor. During the 2021 Hall of Fame game, Jones acknowledged that “It’s kind of hard to not recognize [Johnson’s] contributions to the Cowboys,” while promising to induct him into the Ring of Honor.

Sitting next to Jones, Johnson retorted, “While I’m alive?” creating a viral moment.

The feud was reignited this week when Jones sat down for an interview with NBC’s Newy Scruggs on Sunday.

Scruggs pressed Jones on why he has still yet to induct Johnson, saying his decision to exclude the former coach was “petty.”

The Cowboys owner made his opinion on the situation abundantly clear.

“It’s BS for anybody to be making anything (of that),” Jones said. “I’ve said I’m going to put him in. Now, when I put him in, and the circumstances and what I do with that, there’s a lot more than Jimmy to think about here, and I’ve got a lot of other lives out here that have laid a lot on the line on the field that need to be in that Ring of Honor as well.”

“And so how I do that, what I do it with, I get to make that decision, and it isn’t at the end of the day all tailored around whether Jimmy is sniveling or not,” Jones said.

Scruggs reported that the 78-year-old Cowboys owner “got testy at the end” of the interview.

Johnson, who was inducted into the NFL’s Hall of Fame in 2021, responded to Jones’ remarks about him “sniveling” during a Thursday appearance on “The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz.”

“I had to look that word up in the dictionary. I don’t know that I’ve ever sniveled. Do you ever remember me sniveling?” asked Johnson.

“No, it’s not ever a word I would associate with you,” LeBatard responded.

“It does seem like he could put down the pettiness here and put your name in the Ring of Honor,” LeBatard continued, asking Johnson, “Do you think he will do that before you have passed away?”

“Well, that’s what I said on the show,” Johnson responded. “He said he was going to do it because he told me half a dozen times that he’d put me in. That’s when I said, ‘while I’m alive.’ You never can tell. That’s his decision.

“The only thing is, if he does it, everybody will stop talking about it.”

LeBatard then asked: “I don’t think I’m speaking for you here, Jimmy, but you’re more bemused by it than anything, right?

“Let’s see. I think I’m in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Is that the ultimate, ya know? I’m happy where I am. I don’t have any deep feelings like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do this. I’ve got to do that,’” Johnson stated.

The traded barbs this week indicate the relationship between the two is still far from rosy. Despite that, Jones did present Johnson his NFL Hall of Fame ring during halftime of a game last season.
