The 2021 DeSoto High School girls track team recently won the Texas State Championship at the UIL Track & Field Competition in Austin.

It was the fifth consecutive year the Lady Eagles have taken the title and adds to the team’s nine overall championship titles.

Texas State Rep. Carl O. Sherman (D-DeSoto) took to Facebook to send an enthusiastic shoutout to the team.

“Today our office had the opportunity to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the DeSoto Ladies Track & Field Team—clinching their fifth-straight UIL State Title,” Sherman wrote in a May 20 Facebook post. “I wish each of you the best in your future endeavors. I know you will make us proud. Congratulations, Lady Eagles!”

A DeSoto ISD-sponsored celebration was held on May 20 to recognize the distinguished achievements of the team, their coaches and support staff, with Sherman joining the DeSoto community to bask in the team’s latest and greatest accomplishment.

DeSoto is now the third girls team in UIL history to win at least five-straight team titles.

The Lady Eagles now ties for second with Skyline for most wins in UIL history. Lancaster is currently in first place with 12 championship wins.

“Congrats to @desotoisdengage, 2021 Girls 6A #UILState Track & Field team champions,” Texas UIL wrote in a May 8 Twitter post.

The unprecedented outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the previous season so what could’ve been the fifth title in 2020 was clinched this year, MileSplit Texas reported.

Sherman previously served two terms as the mayor of DeSoto, Texas. Elected in May 2010, he was the first African American mayor of DeSoto and was re-elected in 2013. He presently serves as a bi-vocational minister in the role of senior pastor for the Church of Christ in Hutchins, Texas.
