Author and Dartmouth graduate Danielle D’Souza Gill defended Christianity’s place in education during a new Let’s Talk Local interview focused on faith, universities and what American schools teach.
Gill joined host Sarah Zubiate Bennett to discuss the pressure facing conservative students and the growing debate over whether teaching Christianity’s historical influence constitutes education or indoctrination.
Texas curriculum fight
Zubiate Bennett played a clip of Texas state Rep. James Talarico criticizing a state curriculum that included Bible stories for young students. Talarico called the material “propaganda” and “indoctrination.”
Gill rejected the idea that schools can teach Western civilization or American history accurately while excluding Christianity.
“I think that Christianity and just even, let’s say, ancient Greek philosophy, a lot of things are just part of Western history and Western culture, and those things are going to come up at school,” Gill said.
“To remove a lot of Christianity from that is really doing an injustice to the truth of history,” she added.
The debate extends beyond the elementary materials discussed in the clip. As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the Texas State Board of Education approved new high school social studies standards that include Christianity’s influence on Western civilization and early America. The standards also address Judaism, the history of Islam and the military expansion of early Islamic states.
The State Board of Education scheduled the four high school courses for implementation during the 2033-2034 school year.
Gill argued that removing Christianity and traditional morality from schools does not create an ideologically neutral classroom.
“There isn’t just this empty space vacuum where there’s no worldview that’s being transmitted,” Gill said.
Pressure on campus
Gill also reflected on her experience at Dartmouth, where she said conservative students faced hostility and social pressure over their beliefs.
“The conservative students just can’t be intimidated by them,” Gill said. “It’s so much easier said than done, but that’s what they’re doing. They’re really socially intimidating the students that are there every single day.”
