Why Your Support For The Dallas Express Is Needed Now More Than Ever

The Dallas Express Donor Days

You deserve a newsroom that gives you the facts and trusts you to make up your own mind. That is what The Dallas Express works to provide, and it is why we are asking for your support.

Just days before Tuesday’s midterm elections, The Dallas Morning News published a guest column endorsing state Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D-Austin) for governor. The newspaper later disclosed that the writer, Suzanne Bellsnyder, was a paid consultant to Hinojosa’s campaign and had not revealed that relationship during submission or editing. Editors said they would have declined the piece had they known.

As The Dallas Express reported, readers initially received an endorsement without that crucial disclosure. They deserved to know about the financial relationship from the beginning.

Many of Texas’ best-known newspapers have owners in New York and New Jersey. New York City-based Hearst owns The Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Austin American-Statesman. Its Texas portfolio also includes the Beaumont Enterprise, Laredo Morning Times, Midland Reporter-Telegram and Plainview Daily Herald.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram belongs to McClatchy, which New Jersey-based Chatham Asset Management owns. The paper’s editorial board says it is “not tied to one party or the other.”

The Houston Chronicle, Austin American-Statesman and San Antonio Express-News editorial boards all backed Democrat Gina Hinojosa for governor. The Chronicle also endorsed Democrats for U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor, attorney general and comptroller.

In 2020, a Politico headline called the Hunter Biden laptop story “Russian disinfo,” attributing that assessment to former intelligence officials. Their letter said they had no evidence of Russian involvement. In 2022, a forensic review CBS News commissioned found no evidence of tampering in the copy it examined.

The same question applies to coverage of the Russia investigation, COVID-19, January 6 and Joe Biden’s fitness for office. What does the evidence show?

Texas needs a strong, locally led alternative. Your support helps us provide it.

At The Dallas Express, we are transparent about our center-right point of view. Truth is sacrosanct at DX. It is the foundation of our journalism. We report quickly, back our stories with records and data, and hold officials accountable regardless of party.

We do not endorse political candidates. When we publish a guest opinion, we tell you whose opinion it is.

With Election Day behind us, city halls, school districts and state agencies will keep making decisions that affect your family, your safety and your tax bill.

Following that work takes reporters, public-records requests, careful editing and persistence. Your contribution helps fund original reporting and keeps our coverage free to read. Monthly gifts help sustain that work beyond a single headline, so our newsroom can keep asking questions and pursuing answers.

The Dallas Express is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Charitable contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Please make a one-time or monthly contribution today. Help us keep bringing you the news, showing you the evidence and letting YOU decide.
