Dallas has arranged a $4 billion renovation project for the International District. The new development will be located between the Dallas North Tollway and Preston Road, north of I-635.
The 20-acre space is the future home to restaurants, entertainment, and 10,000 homes adjacent to the Galleria Mall. The City of Dallas, local developers, businesses, private foundations, and individuals will finance the expansion.
Jaynie Schultz, the Dallas City Council representative for the area, said regarding the new project, “It’s going to bring in millions of tax revenue that’s going to help everywhere, across the city.”
The council member hopes that the infrastructure will bring more traffic back to the area, “We’ve lost so many corporate relocations, we’ve lost residents, and this is our chance to gain some of that back — as well as the new people that are pouring into Dallas.”
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson joins Schultz in believing the development will help the community and attract international businesses. Johnson said, “The International District is a wonderful opportunity to boost our city’s presence on the global stage while also transforming an underutilized area into an amazing gathering place that all of our residents can enjoy.”
The territory could possibly serve as the location for a new school in Dallas Independent School District.
Voters approved a $75 million Dallas ISD bond package to build a new pre-K-12 school close to this district.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said in a statement about the new school addition, “The Pre K-12 International District STEAM Academy will provide a unique opportunity for students to enter pre-K and study STEAM from a global perspective, with that knowledge building as they progress through 12th grade. As the Valley View/Galleria area becomes the International District, the school will be a genuine reflection of that theme.”
Along with the International District, Dallas wants to upgrade the streets and add additional lanes on Montfort Drive to minimize traffic. The roads will go from four lanes to six, adding bike lanes and designated places for people to walk.
The city anticipates the construction will be completed by the end of 2022.
