During a primetime address at the White House, President Donald Trump announced a one-time bonus payment of $1,776 for over a million U.S. military service members, referred to as the “warrior dividend.”

“I am proud to announce that more than 1,450,000 military service members will receive a special Warrior Dividend before Christmas… In honor of our nation’s founding in 1776, we are sending every soldier $1,776 – and the checks are already on the way,” the President said.

The symbolic amount is a nod to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed, a patriotic gift to help troops and their families over the holidays.

The total dividends are projected to cost around $2.6 billion. However, Trump credited his recent tariffs for raising the extra funds that allowed the holiday payments to America’s military members, saying, “We made a lot more money than anybody thought because of tariffs.”

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, in a post on X, described the tax-free payout as “never been done before” to improve service members’ quality of life.

“As we enter the Christmas season, some 250 years later, we are proud to provide 1776 with a whole new modern meeting,” Hegseth said. “I can think of no better Americans to receive this check right before Christmas, whether it’s for pay, housing, faith, support, all elements of what we’re doing are to rebuild our military. So to the American warrior, President Trump and I and the entire war department, we have your back.”

Eligibility for the payments covers active-duty personnel and certain reservists in pay grades up to O-6 (colonel or Navy captain equivalent) as of late November 2025. Higher-ranking generals and admirals are excluded.

The payment is a standalone bonus that reportedly will not impact or affect base pay, annual raises, or retirement calculations, per Military.com.

While Trump did mention a pre-Christmas delivery timeline for the payments, the Department of Defense and Defense Finance and Accounting Service have yet to release exact dates as of press time.

This warrior dividend comes on top of other recent benefit initiatives for the troops, such as the 4% pay raise included in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which just passed the Senate and may soon head to Trump’s desk for a final signature.
