A spectator on a mobility scooter caused a multi-rider crash Sunday during the final stage of the Saarland Trofeo Juniors in Germany after moving onto the course as cyclists passed in a packed peloton.
Video of the incident shows riders approaching a spectator-lined stretch before the scooter entered the roadway. One cyclist swerved around the scooter, but Dutch rider Paul Vriesman collided with it and flipped over his handlebars.

Crash At Saarland Trofeo
The Saarland Trofeo is a junior stage race on the UCI Junior Nations Cup calendar. This year’s race ran June 11-14, with the final stage taking place Sunday.
Vriesman rides for the development team of Decathlon CMA CGM, IDLprocycling reported. He did not finish the stage but later said he avoided serious injury.
“The crash looked bad, but it seems I got off fairly lightly,” Vriesman wrote in an Instagram story, according to IDLprocycling. “I wasn’t able to make it to the finish, even though I’d been feeling better with every stage. I have no words for how this could have happened. So much work, and another step backwards.”
The riders involved and the spectator avoided serious injuries, according to the report.
Race Finish
The crash quickly drew attention online as cycling observers warned spectators to remain clear of active race routes, where riders often have little time to react.
Australian rider Alistair Forsyth won the final stage, while Norway’s Sindre Orholm-Lønseth won the overall title, according to race results.
The incident came during an otherwise successful race for the Netherlands team. Dutch rider Liam Brugman won the second stage, while Splinter van ‘t Hoff finished second overall in the general classification.
