Luigi Mangione’s legal defense fund surpassed $1.5 million on his 28th birthday, marking another fundraising milestone in the closely watched prosecution over the killing of a UnitedHealthcare executive.

The GiveSendGo campaign tied to Mangione’s defense showed $1,516,476.69 raised as of May 7 against a stated goal of $1.5 million. The fundraiser was created by “The December 4th Legal Committee,” with funds listed as payable to Tom Dickey Law Offices, P.C.

The latest surge came after a $28,038 donation on May 6 helped push the campaign past the $1.5 million threshold, according to reporting published by TMZ. The donor, identified only as “Carl,” wrote that he had also contributed to “victims in comparable situations,” while criticizing the scale of charges facing Mangione.

Mangione turned 28 on May 6 while being held in federal custody awaiting separate state and federal trials tied to the December 2024 killing of Brian Thompson, the CEO of a division of UnitedHealth Group. Prosecutors allege Mangione fatally shot Thompson on a Manhattan street after targeting him over grievances involving the health insurance industry.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The new fundraising milestone comes roughly a year after the defense fund crossed $1 million on Mangione’s 27th birthday, according to prior reporting by The Dallas Express. At that time, the fundraising committee said more than 28,000 donations had been made, with a reported median contribution of $20.

“Even in a worsening economy, everyday people facing financial hardships of their own continue to provide monetary support for Mr. Mangione,” the committee said in a May 2025 press release cited by The Dallas Express. “Surpassing the one million dollar benchmark represents a step forward in pursuing justice for Mr. Mangione.”

A federal judge last month postponed jury selection in Mangione’s federal stalking-related case until October 5, while rejecting a broader defense request to move the trial into 2027, according to earlier reporting by The Dallas Express. Defense attorneys argued they faced an “impossible position” trying to prepare for overlapping federal and state proceedings simultaneously.

Mangione also faces a separate New York state murder prosecution scheduled for trial in September, per Reuters.

Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett dismissed federal death-penalty eligible counts tied to the indictment, ruling the stalking allegations did not qualify as a “crime of violence” under federal law, according to prior reporting by The Dallas Express. Then-Attorney General Pam Bondi had previously said federal prosecutors would seek the death penalty before that ruling.

Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania following a multistate manhunt after Thompson’s killing in December 2024.
