Arlington fire officials are investigating multiple “suspicious” fires that erupted inside a vacant middle school early Wednesday morning.

It took firefighters 90 minutes to bring the three-alarm fire at the former J.L. Carter Junior High under control. The discovery of fires in multiple locations throughout the building has prompted arson investigators to examine whether the blazes were intentionally set.

Firefighters responded to a smoke investigation at the shuttered school on Tharp Street just before 1 a.m. on January 14. Crews found smoke and flames visible from the structure.

Officials quickly escalated the response to three alarms after discovering fires across both the first and second floors. The unusual pattern of multiple fire locations led authorities to classify the incident as suspicious.

No injuries were reported during the incident. Search teams found the building empty.

Arlington fire officials stressed that while the fires appear suspicious, they have not yet confirmed arson as the cause. The investigation remains active as forensic teams examine the scene for evidence.

The former middle school had been vacant for an unspecified period before Wednesday’s fires. Officials have not released information about the building’s current ownership or planned future use.
