Residents in one Coppell neighborhood were asked to leave their homes on Monday evening as a safety precaution while utility crews assessed a potential gas leak.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Plantation Drive. Several homes in the area were temporarily evacuated, WFAA reported. Atmos Energy said it sent technicians to the area at about 10:30 p.m. at the request of the Coppell Fire Department.

The next day, the City of Coppell issued a statement on social media, confirming that all impacted residents had been notified to evacuate. The city asked the public to avoid the area while crews continued the investigation of the incident.

“Everyone impacted has been contacted. A need for further evacuations has NOT been identified,” the city said in its announcement.

Hannah Cook, public information officer for the Coppell Fire Department, told The Dallas Express that the incident was most likely a gas leak and that crews were still assessing the situation on Wednesday.

The Atmos Energy repaired leak map indicates that a Grade 3 above-ground leak was repaired in the same area earlier in the year.

The City of Coppell issued another warning on Wednesday that Atmos crews were repairing a gas leak in Lewisville near SH 121 and Vista Ridge. The city reminded those in the vicinity to leave the area immediately if they smelled gas and advised them to call 9-1-1 and Atmos Energy. The gas company’s number is 866-322-8667.

The Atmos Energy website offers safety tips on what to do and what to avoid if a gas leak is suspected in the area.

In 2018, a 12-year-old girl was killed in a gas explosion in a northwest Dallas neighborhood, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
