City and fire department officials broke ground on a new fire headquarters facility in McKinney last week, a $48 million project that will take nearly two years to complete.

The construction of the new facility is funded by a portion of the $350 million bond approved in the city’s 2019 bond election. A total of $75 million was dedicated to public safety facility projects, including land acquisition, design and construction of new facilities, and off-site improvements of these facilities, according to the city’s website.

The new facility will include three structures: a 40,000-square-foot two-story fire administration building, a 20,000-square-foot fire logistics center, as well as a new 16,000-square-foot facility for Fire Station No.2, reported Community Impact.

McKinney Fire Chief Paul Dow explained at the ceremony that the new administrative building will provide office space for 40 administrative and emergency management employees as well as those working in training and the emergency medical services division.

The building will serve as the fire department’s emergency operations center and will also house the fire marshal’s office, according to Community Impact.

The fire logistics center will be used to store equipment and medical supplies and will be overseen by a fire captain and three firefighters. There will also be an area dedicated to the maintenance and repair of the equipment.

Dow said the new Fire Station No.2 will replace the 30-year-old facility located at 2001 Community Ave. and will be three times bigger than its predecessor.

“We are very grateful for the trust and the opportunity that the public has provided us [and] the fact that you’re giving us the best possible equipment and facilities to provide services to the city of McKinney,” said Dow, according to Community Impact.

Other public safety projects funded by the bond include the construction of Fire Stations 8 and 11. Construction of Fire Station 11 is “mostly complete,” and officials have already selected a design team for the reconstruction of Fire Station 8.

The new headquarters facility is expected to be completed in August 2025.
