Two people died, and three others were injured after a shooting in Deep Ellum took place on Friday morning.

Police arrived at the 2800 block of Elm Street, near North Crowdus Street, around 2 a.m. on May 13.

Officers frequently patrol the area, so they were able to respond “in seconds.” Recently, several fatal shootings within the area have caused police to strengthen their presence in the east downtown Dallas area.

According to authorities, two individuals approached a man standing on the sidewalk near a barbeque ruck, causing an altercation, and bullets were fired “immediately.” Police said both parties started shooting. In total, five men were shot.

Jermaine Lewis, 42, and Quintin Lowe, 31, were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The three other individuals were transported to a hospital, but their status and injuries were not released. Their injuries were reported as non-fatal.

According to police reports, Lewis and Lowe were among the men involved in the conflict. The men who were caught in the crossfire have not been identified.

Two individuals were arrested for the shooting, but police have not disclosed their identities.

Dallas Police Executive Assistant Chief Albert Martinez described the event as “isolated,” adding that there was no threat to the public after authorities arrived. According to Martinez, the shooting was captured on a security camera.

“You have incidents like this where people have no regard for other people’s safety,” Martinez said. “And they start shooting weapons, and they don’t care who’s in the way.”

Evelyn Logan, an employee at Logan’s Original BBQ truck nearby, said she was taking orders when she heard five gunshots and then heard seven more.

Logan took shelter under the truck and could see bullet casings and a firearm close to her when the gunfire stopped.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the motive for the shooting.
