A student at Everman Joe C. Bean High School in Everman, Texas, alerted a school resource officer on Wednesday that another pupil on campus was believed to be carrying a firearm, prompting an immediate lockdown and a swift law enforcement response.
Shortly after 2 p.m., officials activated emergency safety procedures and mobilized a large police presence. Working closely with campus and district administrators, officers quickly identified and located the suspect.
The juvenile student was taken into custody without incident, and a handgun was recovered. No identifying information is being released because the suspect is a juvenile. Appropriate criminal charges will be pursued, Everman law enforcement said in a news release.
Officials said social media claims that the firearm was displayed during or after a fight are false. They stressed that a fight that took place on campus was an entirely separate and unrelated incident.
The Everman Police Department praised the student who reported the concern and the rapid coordination between school resource officers and administrators. Authorities said safety remains their top priority and encouraged students and community members to continue reporting suspicious behavior.
The department said it will keep working closely with Everman ISD to maintain a safe learning environment. Further updates will be provided as appropriate.
Everman is a suburb south of Fort Worth.
