A suspect wanted on six felony warrants died Friday evening after allegedly shooting two law enforcement officers and barricading himself in a Wood County home in East Texas.
A deputy and state trooper remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
The hours-long standoff highlights escalating dangers facing officers serving warrants in rural Texas communities.
The incident began on Friday morning near FM 515 and FM 2966. Wood County deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety personnel attempted to serve six felony warrants on the unidentified suspect.
The warrants included unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful firearm possession by a felon, firearm theft, vehicular evading, and two drug possession counts.
When officers approached, the suspect opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, sheriff officials said. One Wood County deputy suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A DPS trooper was also struck. Both officers were transported to a Tyler hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition.
The suspect retreated into a residence on FM 2966, initiating an hours-long standoff. Law enforcement deployed negotiators and tear gas throughout the evening. The suspect periodically fired at officers during the siege, investigators said.
After multiple failed surrender attempts, tactical teams breached the home. The suspect allegedly attempted to shoot officers again upon entry.
Law enforcement returned fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at a Quitman hospital following the exchange.
The Texas Rangers are leading the officer-involved shooting investigation, standard procedure statewide. The officers’ names and the suspect’s identity remain withheld pending family notifications.
Wood County sits approximately 100 miles east of Dallas County.
