The parents of a three-year-old boy who was shot and killed in Dallas have been arrested, according to Dallas Police.

According to the Dallas Police Department, officers received a call at approximately 9:58 a.m. on March 28 from the local hospital staff regarding 3-year-old Jalexus Washington, who had been brought into the emergency room with a single gunshot wound to the face.

At the hospital, the child’s mother, Lacravivonne Washington, told officers that the child’s shooting was related to a road rage incident involving a black man in a red shirt driving a dark-colored four-door sedan.

Dallas police arrested Washington on March 30 on outstanding warrants and brought her in for questioning regarding the death of her 3-year-old son.

Despite Washington’s claims, investigators did not find any evidence pointing to a road rage incident. However, police found evidence that she did not properly secure her gun. She was charged with Endangering a Child because her weapon was accessible to a child.

According to an arrest affidavit, an autopsy determined the child was shot at a close range.

The Dallas Police Department revealed that Washington declined to speak further to detectives upon her arrest and was taken to Dallas County Jail for the outstanding warrants.

Dallas police also brought an additional charge of Tampering with Physical Evidence against Washington on March 31, CBS News reports.

According to Dallas police, investigators determined Washington concealed her handgun during the investigation into the death of her child.

The child’s father, also named Jalexus Washington, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and unlawful carrying of a weapon after officers saw him with a firearm not in its holster during the investigation. However, the weapon charge is not related to his son’s shooting.
