The former girlfriend of an accused capital murder suspect, Nestor Hernandez, recently spoke to a local news outlet about what happened at Dallas Methodist Hospital on October 22, 2022.

As reported by The Dallas Express, Hernandez was out on parole when he allegedly opened fire in the hospital, killing two employees.

Selena Villatoro opened up to WFAA’s Rebecca Lopez about the events that took place that heartrending day, which began with Hernandez visiting her and their son she had given birth to the previous day.

Despite the happy occasion, Hernandez apparently arrived hours late at her hospital room and was intoxicated. Villatoro claimed that drinking often made the suspect lose his temper.

“I seen [sic] he was mad, you know because he had a beer in his hand. Like, who would come into the hospital with a beer?” Villatoro told WFAA.

Hernandez apparently then began calling his relatives, telling them goodbye. Soon after, he allegedly began accusing his then-girlfriend of being unfaithful.

“He said ‘you got me messed up’ and he’s like, ‘I’m not dumb. I told you to stop playing with me.’ He’s like, ‘we are going to die today.’” Villatoro continued.

This alleged fit of rage began to frighten Villatoro, she said, and she gripped her son tight.

Then, Hernandez allegedly became violent, hitting her and narrowly missing the baby until Jacqueline Pokuaa, a 45-year-old hospital worker, fatefully entered the room.

“She came in and she had some papers. He got up and he went around her and he just shot her and I was, like, trying to make eyes with her, looking at her trying. I don’t even know what I was trying to do. He shot her and that’s when it all happened,” Villatoro told WFAA.

Hernandez would go on to also allegedly shoot and kill Annette Flowers, a nurse. After a frightening alleged exchange of gunfire with Methodist Police Sergeant Robert Rangel, Hernandez was shot and wounded in the leg.

Villatoro told WFAA that she used this as an opportunity to take the gun Hernandez had allegedly wielded, which had been dropped.

“I jumped up and got the gun. The officers were talking to us and telling him to come outside and I’m like ‘I got the gun. I’m going to throw it outside,’ and I just threw the gun,” she said.

Hernandez was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Dallas County jail on a $3 million bond.

Villatoro told WFAA that she has many regrets surrounding the choices she made that led up to that day and is now focused solely on getting her son back after he was placed in foster care by Child Protective Services.

As for the two women allegedly killed by Hernandez, Villatoro said, “I just want to tell them, I am sorry for their loss.”
