A man wanted in connection with an alleged attempted bank robbery in Dallas was taken into custody Wednesday evening after a lengthy standoff at a Garland motel, police said.
Garland police officers received information shortly after 4 p.m. that the suspect was staying at a motel in the 200 block of West Interstate 30 Freeway.
Police identified the suspect as 56-year-old Billy Jean Stewart of Rowlett. Stewart was wanted in connection with an attempted bank robbery that occurred in Dallas the previous day and was considered armed and dangerous, according to police.
Officers responded to the motel and confirmed Stewart was inside one of the rooms.
After repeated attempts to contact Stewart were unsuccessful, the Garland Police Department activated its SWAT team because of the elevated risk posed by the situation.
Police said officers and SWAT personnel spent several hours attempting to persuade Stewart to surrender voluntarily.
When those efforts failed, SWAT officers entered the motel room and took Stewart into custody without incident or injury, police said.
Stewart was booked into the Garland Detention Center on warrants for attempted robbery out of Dallas County and a motion to revoke tied to a manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance charge involving more than 200 grams.
Both warrants carry no bond, according to police.
