Dallas Police Sgt. Joshua Boykin died Friday, May 29, from injuries he suffered in a small plane crash earlier this month in Forney, the Dallas Police Department confirmed.

Boykin was a 19-year veteran of the department and one of three off-duty Dallas police officers aboard the aircraft when it crashed shortly after midnight on May 16.

“Sergeant Boykin faithfully served the people of Dallas with honor, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service,” the department said. “Throughout his career, he earned the respect of colleagues and the community through dedicated service and leadership.”

Crash Investigation Continues

A Bellanca Downer 14-19-3 crashed near Forney around 12:15 a.m. local time on May 16 with three people on board, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA said it would investigate the crash. Officials have not released a final cause.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Boykin suffered severe spinal injuries in the crash. The two other officers aboard the aircraft survived.

Foundation Supported Boykin After Crash

The Assist the Officer Foundation launched a fundraising campaign for Boykin after the crash, describing him as a respected leader, reliable colleague, and devoted family man.

The campaign said Boykin had served in the Dallas Police Department’s Traffic Unit before continuing his career as a sergeant in the Central Patrol Division.

“He has spent his career answering the call when others needed help,” the campaign said. “Now, it is our turn to answer the call for him.”

The campaign had raised more than $65,000 as of Friday afternoon.
