The city of Mesquite announced that illegal fireworks and gunfire are going to be “aggressively addressed” during the July 4th weekend.

In a news release, the city said that more police and fire department officials will be patrolling neighborhoods in the city over the holiday weekend. People caught engaging in illegal gunfire will be fined as much as $4,000. Violators could also get up to a year in jail.

The illegal possession of fireworks is also going to be addressed, according to the city’s news release.

To aid its efforts, the city urges residents to report illegal fireworks and gunfire to non-emergency police dispatchers at  972-285-6336. People calling to report such cases are asked not to direct their calls to 911 except in cases of life-threatening emergencies.
