In the tech industry, employment gains in December were positive, with Dallas being among five metropolitan areas with the most job openings in that field, according to a monthly report by CompTIA.

“Tech industry employment experienced a net increase of 12,922 new positions, the largest monthly gain since April 2023, CompTIA’s analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) #JobsReport data reveals,” a news release shows.

“Jobs were added in four of the five primary sub-sectors, led by technology services and software development (+8,500) and cloud infrastructure and related positions (+4,400). Tech manufacturing led by semiconductors also had a solid month (+1,600).”

Professional, scientific, technical, manufacturing, administrative, and support services had the most tech job postings. Dallas posted 5,527 jobs — third behind Washington with 10,731 positions and New York with 7,642. Chicago was fourth with 4,632 jobs, and Los Angeles posted 4,324 positions. For Dallas, that was a drop of 1,285 postings from the previous month.

“Tech employment remains on solid footing,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA, in the release. “Despite the ongoing pattern of mixed signals in the labor market tracking data, the optimistic outlook continues to hold.”

Tech occupations declined by 79,000 positions in December. The unemployment rate for the same increased to 2.3%. The national unemployment rate is 3.7%.

Texas posted 12,178 tech jobs last month — a decrease of 3,189 in November. That was second behind California, which posted 14,380 such jobs — down 1,275 positions from the previous month. Virginia was third with 9,360 postings, a decrease of 1,286 positions, and Illinois was fourth with 5,650 positions — down from 1,431 in November.

“Active job postings for tech positions totaled nearly 364,000, including 142,295 newly added by employers in December,” according to the news release. “Employer hiring for artificial intelligence job roles and specialized skills continues to exceed the 10% threshold as a percentage of all tech job postings.”

Based in Illinois, CompTIA is an information technology certification and training organization.
