A new report about the impact of General Motors (GM) showed the company had an economic impact of $8.8 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022.

The analysis from Oxford Economics released on Wednesday and obtained by The Dallas Express found that the total impact of GM’s activities in 2022 amounted to $116.5 billion nationwide.

The Detroit automaker accounted for 709,100 jobs in the U.S. directly impacted by its production of vehicles, engines, batteries, and other related businesses, the report said.

Arlington Assembly is GM’s largest production facility and supports more than 49,000 jobs in Texas at the factory and through suppliers, the report said.

More than 6,200 work in Arlington at the sprawling plant at 2525 East Abram St.

In total, GM itself employs 9,680 in Texas, with others working at the Austin IT Innovation Center and the Fort Worth Parts Distribution Center.

The report said GM paid more than $1.4B in Texas tax receipts in 2022. It invested more than $72.2 million in facilities statewide.

“The tax revenue produced by all of the activity supported by GM in Texas [was] enough to fund the salaries for more than one in 15 Texas public school teachers,” the report said.

The company last week announced a $500 million investment in Arlington, as reported by The Dallas Express.

“GM’s Arlington Assembly plant has been contributing thousands of jobs for hard-working Texans for nearly 70 years as we proudly build full-size SUVs sold across the country and around the world,” Arlington Assembly Communications Manager Thomas Read told The Dallas Express.

“We know that GM’s impact reaches far beyond our vehicles, and we are proud of the jobs and economic activity supported by our business across the state and what that means for our Texas community.”
