Walmart is abruptly shutting down all its health clinics, including the planned expansions into Dallas-Fort Worth.

Just over a week ago, The Dallas Express reported Walmart’s ambitious plan to open 18 new Walmart Health locations in the state, with 10 earmarked for DFW. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the company announced on April 30 the closure of all 51 of its clinic locations and the cancellation of the additional planned sites.

A spokesperson for Walmart told The Dallas Morning News that the clinics will be shut over the coming 45 to 60 days.

The centers, which have been operating since 2019, are comprehensive healthcare facilities strategically located next to Walmart Supercenters, offering a wide range of services, including primary and urgent care, dental, X-ray, labs, and more.

“While our mission to help people save money and live better remains, today we are sharing the difficult decision to close Walmart Health and Walmart Health Virtual Care,” reads a statement from the Bentonville, Arkansas-based company. “Through our experience managing Walmart Health centers and Walmart Health Virtual Care, we determined there is not a sustainable business model for us to continue.”

The company said that “the challenging reimbursement environment and escalating operating costs create a lack of profitability that make the care business unsustainable for us at this time.”

The company said it will focus its health business on its “nearly 4,600 Pharmacies and more than 3,000 Vision Centers.”
