Amazon plans to break ground on a new data center in the southern part of Dallas County in early 2023.

The Seattle-based e-commerce giant picked DeSoto as the site for its future nine-acre data center. It will be located off Hampton Road, south of Interstate 20.

Amazon Web Services, an online computing subsidiary of the retail giant, reportedly purchased the vacant property earlier this year with plans to build a roughly 30,000-square-foot data center on the site.

Dallas-based architect HKS is in charge of designing Amazon’s data center.

The project is expected to be completed sometime in 2024 based on plans filed with the state. However, a representative for Amazon Data Services gave no timeframe for the data center’s completion, noting in an email, “Amazon has a practice against commenting on our future roadmap.”

Amazon is one of many firms that has sought to establish a strong data center presence in North Texas. According to a report from commercial property firm Jones Lang LaSalle, demand for data center space has grown almost tenfold in the first half of 2022.

“Hybrid work is here to stay, and there is no stopping the growth in personal usage of social media, online gaming, and streaming applications,” Jones Lang LaSalle said in its market assessment.

“With this, there is a need for new technology, more robust internet connectivity, and innovative data storage solutions — and, therefore, an influx of data centers to support these needs,” he added.

Aligned Data Centers recently announced plans to expand its Plano campus, citing North Texas as an ideal location because of its “abundant and affordable power,” among other business positives.

Amazon’s Web Services division expanded operations to Dallas in 2014 and is now the biggest high-profile tenant at the Galleria Office Towers on LBJ Freeway near the Dallas North Tollway.

The wider Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is one of the top 10 construction markets in the country for new data centers, according to JLL. New net leases in DFW were roughly 10 times greater than demand in the first half of 2021.
