Thanksgiving took an unexpected turn at a church in Antioch, California, when a would-be burglar armed with an axe encountered more than he anticipated.

Pastor Nick Neves, leader of Family First Church and a martial arts enthusiast, bravely confronted the intruder, demonstrating courage and physical prowess to protect his place of worship, NBC News reported.

The incident occurred early Thursday morning as the suspect attempted to break into the church.

“I shouted at him to stop and told him the police were on their way,” Neves recounted to NBC. The burglar fled briefly but was intercepted by Neves in the church parking lot, leading to a physical struggle.

Neves’ martial arts training in jujitsu and kickboxing played a crucial role in diffusing the situation without excessive harm.

“I was able to grapple with this gentleman without having to do much harm to him,” the pastor explained. The struggle lasted 12 to 15 minutes, during which Neves skillfully restrained the intruder until police arrived.

The pastor’s approach focused on endurance rather than aggression. “I knew I could outlast him,” Neves said, emphasizing his strategy to tire the suspect.

Church member Jeff Strawther praised Neves’ bravery and expressed gratitude for the outcome. “It could’ve gone in a totally different direction, and we thank God it didn’t,” Strawther said.

Neves reflected on the irony of the situation, noting the church’s recent efforts to assist the community.

Days earlier, the congregation had provided groceries for 130 families in need. “If he had come a couple of days earlier, he would have been blessed with food and care,” Neves lamented.

Instead, the suspect caused property damage by smashing windows.

Despite the ordeal, Neves remains hopeful for the intruder’s future. “I hope he changes his ways and chooses good over evil,” the pastor said, underscoring his commitment to compassion and forgiveness.
