Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service, has been having a rough go of it over the last week.

While she was not shot in the ear or targeted for assassination, she appears to be responsible for one of the greatest security failures in modern American history.

The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump was shocking in and of itself, but the lapses in security that allowed a 20-year-old with a rifle to get within 500 feet and fire off several shots were flabbergasting.

As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Cheatle was confronted at the Republican National Convention by Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and John Barrasso (R-WY), who peppered the embattled director with questions that amounted to HOW IN THE HELL COULD YOU LET THIS HAPPEN?

“It is appalling that the Secret Service Director refused to answer our questions. This is one of the greatest security failures in the history of the agency. She can run but she cannot hide. She is a failed leader and she needs to immediately step down from her position,” Blackburn told DX about the encounter.

Cheatle faced a tough crowd on Monday, testifying before the House Oversight Committee. She reportedly had little to say for herself.

Fox News published a timeline of the events leading up to the attempted assassination and the fallout that unfolded the week after, as well as coverage of the hearing. Here’s a bit of that:

On Saturday, July 13, an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, rocked the nation.

Authorities neutralized the assailant after shots rang out, and a federal investigation into the shooting targeting the former president ensued.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee before a group of lawmakers who were visibly frustrated by the director’s refusal to answer basic questions about what she herself admitted was a “failure.”

… Cheatle opened her testimony at the House Oversight Committee by admitting that the agency failed.

“The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13th is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades, and I am keeping him and his family in my thoughts,” she said.
