Voters will have the opportunity to sway the makeup of Texas’ highest court in the 2024 election. Three places on the Supreme Court of Texas will be featured on the forthcoming general election ballot – but not before the field is narrowed in the primary election in 2024.

The Republican incumbents for Supreme Court Justice Places 2, 4 and 6 are all seeking re-election and will face Democratic challengers across the board. Place 4 Justice John Devine is the only incumbent that faces competition in his Republican primary race, with Brian Walker, an appellate judge that lives in Fort Worth, also appearing on the ballot.

Unlike most states, Texas has two courts of last resort, or, phrased differently, two high courts. While criminal cases go before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, civil cases go to the Texas Supreme Court. Oklahoma is the only other state in the union that has two courts of last resort.

The following candidates have been approved by the Texas Secretary of State to appear on the ballot for the Republican and Democratic parties for the primary election on March 5. Early voting is set to kick off on February 20.

Candidates are listed in alphabetical order by last name.
