Las Vegas could see a record number of matrimonies on a single day this New Year’s Eve.

12/31/23 is considered a “specialty date” by the city’s wedding industry. Its repeating pattern — 1-2-3-1-2-3 — attracts more couples than usual, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“Combined with a weekend and all the excitement around New Year’s Eve, what we’re seeing is [that] it may be one of the biggest days of the year and one of the biggest days for a number of years,” said Clark County clerk Lynn Marie Goya to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Melody Willis-Williams, president of Vegas Weddings, which operates multiple venues, says, “It’s a double whammy,” according to WFAA.

“Anytime you get these specialty dates, they’re always hugely popular. But tie that in with New Year’s Eve, and it’s a showstopper,” she said.

The current record number of marriages in a single day in Las Vegas stands at 4,492, set on July 7, 2007 — a specialty date due to its number pattern of 0-7-0-7-0-7. On an average New Year’s Eve, between 450 to 550 couples tie the knot. That means Vegas needs to host nearly 10 times its typical New Year’s Eve weddings to break the record.

For their part, Vegas Weddings is fully booked at midnight at all its venues. Willis-Williams says her company anticipates it will wed over 120 couples that night.

Goya says couples married on unique days like this tell her the dates are “magic.”

“I think the celebration that has a group dynamic is really appealing,” Goya said, per WFAA. “When everyone is in line and they’re all getting married and excited about being in love, it just enhances their own experience.”
