Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham is urging Texans to honor military heroes during Texas Military Heroes Week, which runs through February 6.
The commemoration highlights Texas’s enduring role in defending liberty and recognizes the state’s growing veteran population.
“As Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB), I am reminded every day of the cost of service to our nation and the sacrifices made by those who have and continue to fight for our freedoms,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “From the earliest battles, like the Alamo right here in Texas, to conflicts overseas, please join me in honoring all who have helped secure our freedom throughout the years and those who are defending it still. We truly are the land of the free because of the brave.”
The Texas Veterans Land Board operates 10 long-term care facilities and four state veterans cemeteries. A fifth cemetery will open in Lubbock later this year.
The board is expanding its Voices of Veterans Oral History Program to include video recordings. Veterans can also access low-interest loans for homes, land, or renovations.
“During Texas Military Heroes Week, we come together to honor the incredible bravery and sacrifice of our Veterans. Their unwavering commitment to our nation and their selfless acts of courage inspire us all,” said Tony Dale, Executive Secretary of the VLB. “Let us take this time to recognize and celebrate the heroes among us, and to express our deepest gratitude for their service. Texas stands proud and united in our commitment to support our Veterans, today and always.”
Texas hosts 15 military installations, including Fort Hood, Joint Base San Antonio, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. The state offers more veteran benefits than any other state.
Veterans seeking information about available benefits can contact the Texas Veterans Call Center at 1-800-252-8387.
Buckingham made history in 2022 as Texas’s first female Land Commissioner. She oversees disaster response, energy support, public education, veteran services, and border security initiatives.
