A San Antonio police officer ended up fatally shooting a man while attempting to arrest him on the west side of the city, according to a statement from Police Chief William McManus.

On Saturday morning, the San Antonio Police Department received a call from the dead man’s family reporting that he had 11 outstanding warrants for seven misdemeanors and four felonies.

Based on information received via that phone call, police officers identified a man on a bike as the possible suspect.

McManus reported that the man began to fight the arresting officers when they tried to stop him.

During the struggle, he allegedly pulled away and started yelling, “I have a gun, and I’m going to shoot you,” as he reached for his waist, per San Antonio police.

In reaction to this, a police officer fatally shot him. The suspect, whose identity has yet to be revealed by authorities, died on the scene. Police reportedly found no weapon on him.

The chief said that when San Antonio police reviewed the body-cam footage from the incident, they concluded that it matched the initial reports of the incident.

The officer who shot the now-deceased suspect reportedly sustained a broken hand during the struggle.

Further investigations regarding the shooting and the man’s identity are ongoing.
