A Fort Worth police officer was hospitalized this week after a car crash with an alleged drunk driver.

At about 11:17 p.m. on August 3, police said the officer was headed westbound in the 3700 block of East Lancaster Avenue with his lights and sirens on and passed the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect allegedly failed to yield to the patrol car and instead turned his car into the front of the officer’s vehicle, police said.

The suspect reportedly hit the patrol car and forced it off the road. The officer crashed into a tree and was trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency responders at the scene had to cut the officer from his SUV and eventually transported him to John Peter Smith Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver fled the scene but was arrested a short distance from the crash. The suspect was tested by the Driving While Intoxicated Unit.

The driver, identified as Celso Malia, was charged with intoxication assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
