A Fort Worth police officer was injured Friday evening while assisting the driver of a stalled vehicle. The police officer’s unit was struck by a pickup truck driven by a suspected drunk driver, according to authorities.

The officer was waiting in a patrol cruiser with emergency lights on to warn approaching traffic of a stalled automobile and protect its stranded driver between Northwest Loop 820 and Cahoba Drive.

The pickup driver rear-ended the police car, sending it across four lanes of traffic until it stopped against a concrete barrier. When the police car came to a halt, it faced northward towards oncoming traffic.

A passing driver’s car was struck during the accident, but no one in that vehicle was harmed.

The pickup’s driver was thought to be inebriated at the time of the crash, according to FWPD. The driver’s injury status was unknown when he was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.

The Fort Worth police officer was transported to Texas Health Harris Hospital in an unknown condition.
