A Sansom Park police officer was shot near a Fort Worth elementary school during a training exercise on Saturday afternoon.

Officer Lina Mino was accidentally shot on November 5 during a school-based active shooter training hosted by the Forest Hill Police Department.

Former Fort Worth police officer Mino suffered a single gunshot wound to the face during the training exercise at David Sellars Elementary School in Forest Hill.

“Ammunition was not supposed to be a part of the training; this was not a live fire training,” said Everman Police Chief Craig Spencer, speaking on behalf of Forest Hill Police Chief Eddie Burns, to The Dallas Express.

Spencer told The Dallas Express that the training was being conducted by a third party who provided the weapons and training supplies.

He did not provide the name of the third party.

While his department was not involved with the training, Spencer told The Dallas Express his officers answered the call to help a neighbor in need.

“They’re our neighbor, so when the call came out about an officer being down, we responded to assist,” explained Spencer.

In an email sent to The Dallas Express from James Burchfield Jr., chief of police for the Sansom Park Police Department, he said that officer Mino had been a member of the Sansom Park police department for a little over a year. He added that Mino was a much-loved and valued member of the department.

“We as a department are primarily concerned only with the healing and welfare of our injured officer. We ask for the continued prayers of the community, and we are thankful for all the support,” the email read.

Officer Mino, who is assigned to the Sansom Park police patrol division, was immediately treated on the scene by fellow officers and transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth by Medstar, where she underwent surgery.

“Everything that we’ve heard since then has been positive,” said Spencer. He said they have also heard “that she is doing much better now.”

The Texas Rangers are investigating. The Dallas Express reached out to them for additional information and comment but had not received any at the time of publication.
